Overview
Loss Detection helps NCX’s Paid Members identify and respond to unexpected forest changes such as deforestation or degradation. By leveraging remote sensing, proprietary data analysis, and disturbance notifications, Loss Detection provides timely insights that empower landowners to take action. Intuitive maps visually highlight areas of disturbance, enabling landowners to quickly assess changes and determine the appropriate response.
Where can I find Loss Detection?
Loss Detection can be accessed by clicking on the Threats tab at the top of your screen when you’re logged into your Landowner Account.
How it works
- Automated Monitoring: NCX analyzes satellite imagery and other geospatial data sources to detect changes in forest cover.
- Impact Assessment: The Loss Detection map shows you the nature and scale of detected changes (minor and major), helping landowners understand potential and relative risk.
- Alerts: Landowners will receive alerts to their email for high-confidence disturbances detected on their land.
Interpreting alerts
- Minor changes - Small-scale tree loss that may be due to natural causes or normal land use.
- Major changes - Larger-scale disturbances that may indicate unauthorized logging or environmental threats.
FAQ’s
- Q: How frequently does Loss Detection update? A: NCX runs its Loss Detection process weekly on Mondays. Changes to the Loss Detection map and any corresponding alerts follow the same weekly schedule.
-
Q: What should I do if I detect an alert? A: Review the detected change on the Threats page of your Account and cross-check with your known recent land activities to confirm if the change is expected or not. If the change is unexpected, we recommend taking the following steps:
- Conduct an on-the-ground verification, if possible.
- Document findings and take photographic evidence where applicable.
- If unauthorized activity is suspected, contact relevant authorities for guidance.
- Q: Can I use Loss Detection to detect a Southern Pine Beetle outbreak on my land? A: Loss Detection does not currently detect Southern Pine Beetle-related disturbances.
- Q: Can I customize my alerts’ sensitivity? A: At this time, alerts are automatically configured based on our weekly process, but customization options may be introduced in future updates. What to customize your alerts? Let us know by emailing us at landowners@ncx.com.
- Q: What if I don’t receive an alert? A: No news is good news! We might not have detected any significant changes.
- Q: What if I think the Loss Detection isn’t accurate? A: If an alert appears inaccurate, compare it with on-the-ground observations as noted above and report any inconsistencies you find to our team at landowners@ncx.com.
